Like A Pumpkin Project

We had the girls make a pumpkin using orange construction paper. We talked about the senses (can be part of Try-It) and turned the lights out in the room....then in the dark; had the girls draw a circle for their pumpkin, eyes, mouth and nose. Then we turned the lights back on to see how well they did. This was to have them try using their sense of "touch" to judge the size of paper, location, etc. as to where to place items. It caused a lot of laughs as well after seeing each different pumpkin. Then we read the following poem and had them each glue a copy of it on the back of their pumpkins.

Like A Pumpkin

God picked you from the patch, brought you in, washed all the dirt off that
had splattered on you from the other pumpkins.
He then cut the top off and scooped out all the yucky stuff from inside.

He removed the seeds of doubt, hate, greed, etc.
He then carved onto you a new smiling face and
put His Light inside of you to shine for all the world to see.

Aren’t you glad you’re a Pumpkin?

Silent Night Translations (Words for song in other languages)

Teach the Children Story
(
Beautiful story about Christmas to read to the girls or give copy to send home with them!)

#1:
We used a sheet of green or red construction paper. Then using white washable poster paint we had the girls each dip their palms & fingers into the paint and press their handprints onto the construction paper (leaving a small unit
in the center for the poem below). Then they glued the poem into the center of the "poster-picture" and we put yarn "hangers" onto the top of it so it could be hung.
After they dried we wrapped them for their parents for a Christmas gift.

Sometimes I get discouraged
Because I am so small
You find my fingerprints on doors
And windowsills and walls.
But now I’m growing bigger
And soon I’ll be so tall
You’ll find the little fingerprints
Hard to recall!

Just to help you remember
Here’s how they looked in December!
Merry Christmas
2002

#2:
Take small empty boxes or even just left over pieces of 2x4 and wrap them in holiday wrapping paper.
Tie with a ribbon and attach a tag with the following poem:

This is a very special gift,
That you can never see,
The reason it's so special is,
It's just for you from me.

Whenever you are lonely,
Or ever feeling blue,
You only have to hold this gift,
And know I think of you.

You never can unwrap it,
Please leave the ribbon tied,
Just hold the box close to your heart,
It's filled with love inside.

This is inexpensive, easy and the parents will love it!

#3:
Record Bowl

Preheat your oven to 350.  Take a metal bowl and place it upside down on a cookie sheet.  Take the record and place it on top of the bowl.  Place in oven.  Watch carefully!  I can't remember how long it takes but the longer your oven is on the shorter time it takes.  The record will start folding down the side of the bowl.  You can take it out at any time it starts to melt down.  Some girls like it with big fold and some with small.  When it comes out you have just a few seconds that you could shape it but it is hot.  Let it cool and than paint with acrylic paint.  I made these several times and kids love them!!!!!

#4:
Cake-in-Cup
1 box of cake mix, any flavor
1 (4 serving six) instant pudding mix (not sugar-free), any flavor

Place dry cake mix and dry pudding mix into a large bowl and blend with a whisk.  This will be about 4 - 4 1/2 cups dry mix and will make 8-9 coffee cup cake mixes.  Place 1/2 cup dry mix into a Ziploc bag.  Continue making packets until all your dry mix is used.
Flavor Ideas:
lemon cake mix - lemon pudding
yellow cake mix - pistachio pudding
white cake mix - white chocolate pudding
yellow cake mix - chocolate pudding
devil's food cake mix - chocolate pudding
pineapple cake mix - coconut pudding
butterscotch cake mix - butterscotch pudding
orange cake mix - white chocolate pudding

Select a large coffee mug.  Check to be sure it holds 1 1/2 cups of water.  That way you will be sure you have bought the size the recipe
calls for.  It can't have any metallic paint on it because it will be used in the microwave.  Be SURE it is microwave safe basically!

Glaze Mix
1/3 cup powdered sugar
1 1/2 tsp dry flavoring
(such as powdered lemonade mix, powdered orange breakfast drink mix, cocoa powder, or vanilla powder, sold by the coffee flavorings)

Select the appropriate to the cake you are making.  But both items in a Ziploc bag and seal.  Label this bag "glaze mix"
Place 1 of each bag in the coffee cup.
Now attach the following instructions:

Bake-a-Cake-in-a-cup
Generously spray inside of cookie cup with cooking spray. Empty contents of cake mix into cup.  Add 1 egg white,
1 tbsp oil, and 1 tbsp water to dry mix.  Mix 15 seconds, carefully mixing in all the dry mix.  Microwave on full power 2 minutes.
(You may not get satisfactory results in a low wattage small microwave) While cake is cooking, place ingredients from glaze bag into
a small container and add 1 1/2 tsp water.  Mix well. When cake is done, pour glaze over cake in cup.  Enjoy while warm!

This is very easy and very delicious!!!!!

#4:
Mason Jar Lid Picture Ornaments

Take rim part and glue on lace or ribbon.  Slip a piece of thin ribbon or string thru the rim and knot to use as a hangar.  Trim the picture to size of the lid (flat) part.  Glue picture to lid, allow a few minutes to dry.  Glue picture, facing out into lid.

Voila, picture Xmas ornament.

These are cute tree ornaments and the parents loved them.  I cut pieces of endroll (that free blank newsprint you can
get from newspaper offices) for them to decorate and make their own wrapping paper. We used the leftover ribbon to wrap the gifts.

#5:
Sock Warmer (for aches & pains)

Use mens tube socks - largest size you can find. Girls can decorate the socks with permanent markers.

Fill each sock about 2/3 full of rice (about 2 - 3 cups of rice per sock). Tie off the sock top.
Very easy to do - cute and useful too!

Instructions for use:

Put into microwave for about 1 minute. If sock gets too dirty, dump out rice, wash and dry it and refill!

#6:
Take a small baggie (about 2''x2'') and fill with mini-marshmallows (white colored ones). Attach the following note to it:

Santa checked his list,
He even checked it twice...
He found out that you've
  been naughty,
instead of being nice...
Since coal is so expensive,
Here's the latest scoop:
Santa's filled your stocking,
with this snowman's poop!
