The Halloween WRIGHT Family

(Persons sit in circle and pass gifts right and left according to directions in the story's. I used several small Halloween Candy bars for the "wrapped" gift item.)

Halloween was almost there and Mother WRIGHT was just about finished
decorating.

Father WRIGHT and Bill WRIGHT returned from their last minute pumpkin
picking.

"There is not much LEFT  to be done," said Father WRIGHT as he came into the
kitchen.

"Did you hang the skeletons in the trees where I told you to?" asked Mother
WRIGHT.

"I LEFT them RIGHT where you told me to," said Father WRIGHT.

I am glad we got all the candy we needed -----I don't have any money LEFT,"
said Billy WRIGHT.

The hall phone rang and Susie WRIGHT ran to answer it.

She came running back into the kitchen exclaiming, "Aunt Tillie WRIGHT LEFT
some candy for us on Gramma WRIGHT's back porch."

"I'll go RIGHT over there and get it," she said as she LEFT the house.

Father WRIGHT LEFT the kitchen and brought in the pumpkins they bought.

By the time Susie WRIGHT returned, Mother WRIGHT, Father WRIGHT, and Billy
WRIGHT had begun to carve the pumpkins.

The entire WRIGHT family sang new Halloween songs as they finished carving
the pumpkins.

Then they LEFT all the pumpkins sitting in windows and went to bed, hoping
they had chosen the RIGHT candy for the big day.

Now I hope you have the RIGHT present for yourself because that's all that
is LEFT of our story----except to say Happy Halloween !!!!

Isn't that RIGHT ?????

The WRIGHT Troop Celebrates Juliette Low's Birthday

Juliette Low's birthday was almost there and Mrs. WRIGHT's troop was just
about finished decorating.

Mrs. WRIGHT, her daughter Susie WRIGHT, and her cousin Sally WRIGHT returned
from their last minute shopping.

"There is not much LEFT to be done," said Mr. WRIGHT as he came into the
kitchen.

"Did you hang the streamers above the table where I told you to?" asked Mrs.
WRIGHT.

"I LEFT them RIGHT where you told me to," said Mr. WRIGHT.

"I am glad we got all the food we needed---I don't have any money LEFT,"
said Sally WRIGHT.

The hall phone rang and Susie WRIGHT ran to answer it.

She came running back into the kitchen exclaiming, "Aunt TIllie RIGHT LEFT a
cake for us on Gramma WRIGHT's back porch.

I'll go RIGHT over there and get it," she said as she LEFT the house.

Mr. WRIGHT LEFT the kitchen and brought in the presents they bought.

By the time Susie WRIGHT returned, Mrs. WRIGHT, Mr. WRIGHT and Sally WRIGHT
had begun to set the table.

Just then the doorbell rang.  Mrs. WRIGHT's troop had arrived.  Each girl
took off her coat and LEFT it RIGHT by the front door.

Jennifer turned to her LEFT to say "Hi" to Karen.  Jessica was so busy
talking to Elaine that she bumped RIGHT into Betty.

Together they all finished helping Susie WRIGHT and Sally WRIGHT finish
setting up for the party.

"That looks RIGHT nice," they all exclaimed.

The WRIGHT troop played games, made crafts, and sang a RIGHT large number of
songs,

including Sally WRIGHT's favorite, "I LEFT My Heart in San Francisco".

They decided to WRITE birthday cards for babies born on Juliette Low's
birthday.  Finally it was time for cake.

Mrs. WRIGHT LEFT the room to get the cake while Sally RIGHT got the forks
and started passing them out, starting on her LEFT.

The entire troop ate and ate until there was no cake LEFT.

All the members of Mrs. WRIGHT's troop agreed that this was the best party
ever.

They cleaned up all the mess that was LEFT and put everything away in the
RIGHT place.

Mr. WRIGHT was very pleased.  "Thank you, girls, for all your help.  That
was the RIGHT thing to do.

No wonder your leader, Mrs. WRIGHT, is always so proud of you."

One by one the girls' parents came for them.  One by one they all said,
"Good night, Mrs. WRIGHT.  See you next week."

Now I hope you have the RIGHT bag of candy for yourself because that's all
that is LEFT of our story--- except to say

Happy Birthday Juliette Low !!!!

Isn't that RIGHT ????

Halloween Games

Five Little Jack O'Lanterns
Five little pumpkins were sitting on a gate.
The first one said, "It's getting mighty late."
The second one said, "There are witches in the air."
The third one said, "I really don't care."
The fourth one said, "Let's run, run, run."
The fifth one said, "It's Halloween fun."
"Whooo" went the wind, and out went the light,
And the five little pumpkins rolled out of sight.

Let children draw and cut out their Jack O'Lanterns from orange construction paper. Using a black color or pencil, help them draw on
faces. Using wooden dowels, tape the dowels to the backs of the pumpkins and recite the above poem.

Pumpkin Bowling

We played this as a Pack meeting activity, with each den forming "a team" in the Pack 200 Pumpkin bowling league, the P200 PBL grin. The "bowling alley" was setup with two VERY long strings set about 15' apart forming the "scratch line" and the "pin set line". (I prefer the bright neon
string.....its much easier to see....but use whatever works for you.)
For pins, I used empty plastic bottles (1 liter size?)--one per den. I also had different colors: clear, blue, green, so each den could "remember"
which bottle was theirs (this age group never fails to AMAZE me in this regard--leave NOTHING to doubt. Use one of the small pumpkins or gourds that are shaped fairly round for the bowling ball.

"Way Down Yonder Relay

Cub Scouts sit on the floor in two lines which face each other.  A dish containing kernels of corn is placed in front and to the right of the
players at the head of each line, and an empty dish is at the end of each line.  Each player is given a teaspoon.  On signal, the first player takes a
kernel in his spoon, transfers it to his neighbor's spoon, and so on down the line.  The first player may start another kernel down the line right
away.  As the end player receives the kernel and drops it in an empty dish, he yells, "Way down yonder!"  Any kernel that is dropped must be replaced on the spoon by the person who dropped it before it can be passed along.  The team which succeeds in getting all the kernels in the second dish is the winner." I've played this game with the girls having to stand up and yell "Way down yonder!"   Not as physically active as some, but an ok game. Here's another one from the same book that is a little more active.  At Halloween I've had girls use pumpkin seeds instead of bean for this:

"Bean and Straw Relay

Line up the dens relay race fashion.  Using a drinking straw, the first Cub Scout in each line picks up a bean by suction, carries it across the room,
and deposits it in a bowl or cup.  The first team to have all players succeed in carrying  a bean wins." For this one I've played it so that you use 2 egg cartons for each team. You put a bean (or pumpkin seed) in each "cup" of an egg carton on one side of the room, and the empty egg carton for the same team on the other side of the room.  Then you have the relay race go until the beans from one egg carton for a team are all moved to the other egg carton for that team.  I would make sure the beans are each in a separate "cup" of the egg carton. If they aren't, have a separate person for the team run over and be allowed to move one bean to the right place during his turn rather than move a bean from one carton to the other.
Then there is always the "over under" relay.  You could use a plastic pumpkin or something similar instead of passing a ball or balloon as is usually done.

Over-Under Relay

Have the girls all stand in lines (teams) behind each other.  The first girl is given a ball or other object to pass.  When the relay is started, the girl passes it over her head, without looking back, to the girl behind her That girl, again, without looking back, passes the ball between her legs to the girl in back of her.  The girls alternate in passing the ball until it gets to the back.  The girl in the very back then takes the ball and runs to the front with it, starting the relay over again.  When all of the girls have been at the back and then run to the front, the relay is over.  (The girl who was in front at the start should be in front again.)

Variations:

1 - Have the girls pass the ball only over their heads, not through their
legs.
2 - Have the girls pass the ball only through their legs, not over their
heads.
3 - Have the girl at the end place the ball between her knees and "kangaroo
hop" to the front of the line to start it over.
4 - Have the girls pass the ball only over their heads and have the last
girl crawl, pushing the ball in front of her, through the legs of the girls
to get to the front and start the relay over.
5 - Have the girl at the end run "in and out" (around the right side of the
girl in front and the left side of the girl in front of that, etc.) to get
to the front of the relay line.

This game is actually called Barnyard because you use animal sounds, however, at my daughter's Birthday/Halloween birthday party we used this game and used Halloween sounds:  black cat, mummy, Dracula, ghost, witch (cackles), etc. It is an active game and a lot of fun.  Best done on a lawn.

Scatter peanuts (in the shells) over a lawn--about 30 - 40 for each team. Do this before the kids come outside.  Then divide the group into several teams of 3-5 on each team.  Choose a team leader.  Give each team an assigned animal (or Halloween character).  They have to come up with a sound and motion.  Have everyone show off their sounds/motions one team at a time, so they know what sounds will be out there.

Then give each team leader a paper lunch bag.  The team leader is the only one who can pick up a peanut.  The team members must identify the location of a peanut by finding it and making the team sound/motion until the leader comes over to pick up the peanut.  The leader may not pick up peanuts unless they are identified by her team.  A team member may not touch the peanut--only identify where it is.  When the activity slows down and it looks like not all the teams are finding peanuts--call time.  Then each team counts their peanuts. This is hysterical !!  The poor team leader is running frantically to each team member.  Of course more than one team member is identifying peanuts and desperately trying to get their leader's attention over the noise and competition of their own team members.  And then there is all the noise from the other teams also doing the same thing.  It does get noisy and I'd recommend a video camera to tape the fun.  This can be frustrating for very young team leaders, so in a young group, keep the numbers on the team smaller and use the older kids for the team leaders.
Have fun !!  (the squirrels will love what the kids don't find !!)

Mummy Wrap

Form teams.  Each group has a roll of toilet paper.  Wrap one person like a mummy. First team done wins!

My girls like Ghouls and Goblins.  You need at least 3 different types of characters like ghouls, goblins, & ghosts.  Place signs around the game unit

alternating so that there aren't 2 of the same kind next to each other. There should be 1 less sign than girls playing.  1 girl is it.  The leader or it calls 2 of the different types of characters and they have to all try to change places as it goes for a spot.  Whoever is left out of it is it for the next round.

Wrapped Candies

Using a deep pan or tub (the longer the better) place various wrapped candies all over bottom. Cover with cooked spaghetti noodles (color if you like). Each child gets one grab in the slimy stuff! Have wet clothes ready to wipe candy off and plastic bags to put them in.

Better for ages 5 & up.

HARVEST DRAW

Each child is given a piece of paper and a pencil. If there is not room at a table for each child, each child needs a book or other hard surface to draw on.

Each child is blindfolded or asked to close their eyes. The leader tells the children to draw the eyes of a jack-o-lantern, the round pumpkin part, the nose mouth and then stem. This is not easy with the eyes closed and the results can be very funny.

Farmer John Relay (Middle school and up)

Get two large brown grocery bags. In each put a long underwear, pants with elastic suspenders, bright colored bandana, a crazy wig, shirt, corn cob pipe, hat, etc. Divide into two teams. On the word "go" each team must send a person to the bag. The person must then put on everything over the clothes they are presently wearing and model for 10 seconds. Then take everything off and put it back in the bag and run back to their team so that the next team member can run and model.

Witch Hunt (All ages)

First design a witch on a piece of paper as a template (do not make it to big). Trace it onto black construction paper. Cut out 50 or more black witches and then hide them all over your house, classroom, gym, etc. For the party have everyone either individually or in pairs go in search of the witches. Turns off the lights! Make sure everyone or couple has a flashlight. The person or couple returning with the most witches wins.
